Halloween Memory 1965

Jon Provost and Teddy

Jon Provost "Timmy" Then and Now

Jocey is always begging me to "tell a story" about something or other -
but I can never, ever remember anything when she puts me on the spot - why is that?
This memory came to me in the middle of the night, as they always do.

It was our first Halloween after our fateful move to big time Los Angeles.
Dad's show was transferred to the sister station of KPTV in Portland..
We lived on Vose Street, in Van Nuys - across the street and a few doors down from the owners of Lassie(s)!  Lorne Greene also lived close by, but I didn't care about him.  All I could think about was if   Little Jon Provost, with his cute floppy blond hair was at Lassie's house or not.

Well, Halloween eve there he was!  My dreamboat was passing out quarters
and autographed photos of himself and Lassie for the Trick-or-Treaters!
I changed several times so I could return again and again -
not so much for the money, but to gaze lovingly into my little Timmy's eyes...

OK - so maybe Jocey won't be so enamored by my story as I was by the memory.
Little Timmy is all grown up now - and apparently his life wasn't all rosie after the show.
But he is now happily married to Laurie Jacobson (I never had a chance, did I)
and still plays 2nd fiddle (but happily) to their dog.
He doesn't happen to own a collie,
but I love this photo of him and probably one of Lassie's great-grandkids!

Just have to add the fact that we also lived next door to Lassie's trainer, Mr. Weatherwax!
He told us that Feather (our collie - dad's sidekick on his TV show)
was more a "pure bread" collie than Lassie!
It was due to his mostly red coloring (Lassie had a lot of black in his coat)
and his pidgeon toes - a sign of a good farm dog!
Dad only bragged to close friends and family - but I'll never forget it - he was so proud.

So Happy Halloween Jocey - there is a little story for you...

Wow - check this out - I found some photos from my 11th birthday (1965).
These are in that Van Nuys house on 15719 Vose Street!
I am doing a trick with Feather, as my friends sat mesmerized... or bored... can quite tell.
Look!  There's my little redhead friend, Denise!  We remained best buddies
until she died recently.  Rest in Peace sweet friend.

I still can't believe Little Timmy gave up "The Girl in Turquoise" - how could he have resisted me?
I guess I should have invited him to my party!  I'll beT he could have done a mean "Freddie!"

The Hunt for Halloween

Ribbon Pumpkins - The Autocrat

This blog is such a work in progress... similar to my house... my life... my soul...  in my search to find Deborahrah I am searching for things to make my house feel like a home.
The weather has turned and reminds us of why we love it here - the windows are open - birds are chirping and for most of the country it means turn on the heat,
but for us it means open the windows, HALLOWEEN is almost here!
With granddaughter living with us - the fun of decorating for the holidays has begun!
I think we shall go Goodwill Hunting today to find some old silver candlesticks
and some other goodies to decorate our mantle & piano with!
I love the elegance of the silver mixed with the fun stuff...
and don't you love these pumpkins!
We live in the desert, so cutting pumpkins, if not done on Halloween DAY just doesn't work!
This is perfect - and Jocey will go crazy helping me with this!

Pinterest is my new obsession - and has given me a place to organize my thoughts.
If I see something inspiring, I PIN IT!
If I stare at them long enough, they might come to fruition!
I can't find the source for the top photo... sorry about that.
Come PIN with me!

Finding Deborahrah - Let's do this!

Long ago, in a bar far far away, a dear friend of mine nicknamed me Deborahrah.  It's the perfect descriptive name for me:  plunky, perky, silly, drifty, all those "debbie" adjectives... but mostly, I talk to much.  Maybe that's why this blog might work.  I wonder how many friends see my name on the caller ID and don't pick up.  I'm better than I used to be... but still... this blog will be another outlet for my words.  Thank you to those who used "word vomit" to describe my conversations... I doubt that was a compliment, but it motivated me to write more... to avoid spreading my contagious disease... looks like I'm a little late jumping on the blogging epidemic train... but why not?

I was thinking of a classier name... one with more meaning and something people would remember.  My Purple Pen... Purple Peacock Feathers... Pretty in Teal... something lovely, lilting, catchy.  But everything sounds so pretentious.  So Deborarah will remain as it is.  Just me.  I started this originally so I could follow some other bloggers - friends on missions, newlywed friends, etc.  I'd forgotten all about it... and it's already in place... in other words... easy.

But then, and as cliche as it sounds, this year has been about "finding myself."  I began a new journey October 1, 2011, and the basic theme of this journey was learning more about myself - especially what makes ME happy?  Not what I can do to make others happy (because co-dependency is an issue here), but what deep down gives Deborah satisfaction.  Well... writing is one of those outlets.  So instead of just plain "Deborahrah" how about:  Finding Deborahrah.  It is an ongoing qwest... down a long road that will lead to who knows?  I don't care about the outcome, as much as I care that I stay on this path... a path of of being true to myself... of being calm... of finding happiness in places I'd forgotten.

Never thought I'd be doing this.  Journaling yes... but blogging?  I've spent years writing my private thoughts in journals.  Why would I want to put my  personal thoughts out here for the world to see?  More importantly, who would read them?  Then one day I began "pinning."  I loved it and wanted more.  I got lost in pinning... which meant getting lost in the maze of  bloggers, on my qwest for the perfect PIN!  From one to the next to the next, not remembering where I began.  Maybe, just maybe, someone will stumble upon mine and relate to something I say.  That's kind of thrilling isn't it?  To have someone read your words and possibly be moved by them?  I'm not professing to be a great novelist, but I know there are those out there struggling with the same issues I've been struggling with.  We can get through this together... but in the meantime, this is mostly just for me... for finding Deborah... and finding the fun side of me again... my Deborahrah side!

I want to profusely thank the counselors at ABC Wellness Center for holding my hand through this process of discovery... for helping me find a way back.  I was divinely guided to them... and will be forever grateful for the "shit hitting the fan" that caused me to hit bottom - because the only way from there is UP!  Awareness, Balance & Connection... http://www.abcwellnesscenter.org/index.php
